Parasites have very unique characteristics, and they are very good at what they do, and that is survive. They are smaller than the host that they choose to invade, but they can reproduce much more rapidly. They do not only feed at night, but it is their preference. A newborn beg bug is translucent until it begins to molt and mature. It will then begin to take on color. The adult bed bug is a reddish-brown color and they have many little hairs on their bodies. The adult bug is approximately 5 millimeters by three millimeters.
These tiny bugs have an interesting way of communicating with one another. They can indicate sex, food and prey, by secreting chemicals to signal each other. The type of chemicals that they use are called pheromones and kairomones. All of this has been put into a package five millimeters small.
The bugs are drawn to us by our warmth, carbon dioxide, and by certain chemicals, that we currently do not know. They prefer to feed when it is still dark and preferably before sunrise, but they will eat in the daytime if they have to. Their normal feeding schedule is approximately every five to ten days, but they can actually survive an entire year without feeding.
With two tiny tubes, these bugs can withdraw your blood and inject you with saliva at the same time. There saliva contains anticoagulants so that your blood will not begin clotting while the bug is feeding, and it also contains anesthetics to dull the pain of the injection site. The anesthetic could last for hours or days before you begin to itch and even notice a bite mark.
If you want to be sure that you do not have bed bugs, change to white sheets and it will be easier to tell. Watch for small drops of blood on your sheets in the morning. Also, wherever they have defecated will show up very conspicuously against your white sheets. You may also find their dropping around the seams of your mattress.
